Avery Nguyen joined Joe’s Music Mill as a volunteer and now runs our weekly ‘Strings ‘n Things’ sessions where kids can try out musical instruments and receive free music instruction. These sessions run each Wednesday from 4-5:00 at Rideau Heights Community Centre.
We asked Avery five questions to find out more about her and her work with Joe’s Music Mill.
Tell me a little bit about your background?
"I was born and raised in Vietnam, where I developed a deep passion for music at a young age—around four or five years old. By the time I turned sixteen, I became increasingly interested in music production, which ultimately inspired me to move to Canada to pursue my studies and further develop my skills in this field."
What are you doing besides your work for Joe’s Music Mill?
"I’m currently in my second year of the Music and Digital Media program at St. Lawrence College. Beyond my studies, I am an Ambassador for the Modern Fuel Artist-Run Centre and also work as a Studio Monitor for my program, allowing me to stay deeply engaged in the music and arts community here."
Why did you choose to apply to volunteer at Joe’s Music Mill?"I've been a member of Joe’s Music Mill for a year now, and I applied to volunteer to gain exposure to a variety of instruments and become more actively involved in Kingston's vibrant music community."
Can you describe a typical 'Strings 'n Things' session at Rideau Heights Community Centre?"A typical 'Strings 'n Things' Ukulele jam session lasts around an hour and fifteen minutes. Kids from the Rideau Heights Community area join us to explore the range of instruments available at Joe's Music Mill while enjoying snacks and having a great time. We sit in a circle and play music based on the kids' requests—whether it’s ukulele, violin, or another instrument. Many of the kids also enjoy drawing on the board while music fills the room, making the session both interactive and creative."
What do you enjoy most about these sessions?"What I enjoy most is the energy, laughter, and enthusiasm from the kids. It’s incredibly fulfilling to be able to share my love for music with them and provide the same kind of exposure to musical instruments that Joe’s Music Mill has offered me."
