What we do
Joe’s Music Mill is a non-profit musical instrument library located in Kingston, Ontario. It was inspired by the late Joe Chithalen, a talented bass player who wanted everyone to experience the joy of playing an instrument. The Mill has over 1,000 instruments and resources including guitars, keyboards, drums, horns, violins, percussion, amplifiers, exotic instruments, sheet music, and much more – and they’re all available to borrow free of charge. These instruments support approximately 5,000 lending contracts annually to Kingston musicians of all experience and ability.
We are partners with Sistema Kingston in delivering an intensive after school music program for underserved children that focuses on positive social change through the pursuit of musical excellence. The Mill also supplies instruments, on a school-year basis, to students in support of their music programs.
Joe’s Music MIll’s strategic plan is
1) to enhance its visibility in the community;
2) expand and maintain its first class lending operations by improving our lending capabilities by listing our over 1,000 instruments on the internet and the ability to make on-line reservations; and,
3) to focus on education as part of our mandate.
We have launched a pop-up site in the Rideau Heights area, and recently worked with the Limestone School Board to provide curriculum-based music education to students in the primary grades.
